Nature of Work

This position involves the performance of a variety of clerical and accounting tasks connected with maintaining the financial and accounting records of the Public Works Department. Assignments are performed with relatively little supervision, and incumbents make independent decisions based on established policies or regulations. This position is classified as “Non-Exempt” under the Fair Labor Standard Act.

Examples of Work

The following examples are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed in positions allocated to this classification. The absence of the specific statement of duties does not exclude those tasks from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment of the position:

  • Balance daily weigh tickets, file all city and commercial charge tickets, process monthly billing by weigh tickets, card billing and weigh ticket billing.
  • Post all receipts, make deposits, and balance control sheets for card billing and weigh ticket billing.
  • Check Greenwood Utilities printouts for solid waste charges and make adjustments.
  • Responsible for various reports necessary in the operation of Public Works Department. Assist with budget preparation and analysis. Compose and type letters and memos.
  • Review and work all vendor invoices received by Public Works for payment.
  • Responsible for telephone and radio communications with the public and other employees. Make work orders for complaints and relay messages to employees.
  • Maintain files on construction projects, grant funded projects and special assessment projects.
  • Fill in for other employees in the office when they are sick or on vacation.
  • Performs such other duties as assigned by the Director of Public Works.

Qualifications

  • Ability to work without close supervision and comprehend oral and written instructions.
  • Excellent knowledge of accounting principles and procedures.
  • Considerable knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and standard clerical techniques.
  • Considerable knowledge of English, spelling, punctuation and ability to make arithmetical calculations rapidly and accurately.
  • Possess good computer skills and have a working knowledge of calculators, copiers, and telephone equipment.
  • Must have high school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Ability to deal effectively with the public and have a pleasing telephone and radio voice.
  • Must Possess a Valid Mississippi Driver’s License
