Nature of Work

This is manual or unskilled work of ordinary difficulty and responsibility in performing a variety of functions related to grounds maintenance.  The work is performed under the general supervision of a foreman or supervisor.  The incumbent operates tools and equipment related to grounds maintenance.  The position is classified “non-exempt” under FLSA.

Examples of Work

The following examples are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed in positions allocated to this classification.  The absence of the specific statement of duties does not exclude those tasks from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment of the position.

  • Uses hand tools such as hoe, rake, shovel, sling blade, and edging machine.
  • Mows grass, picks up paper, rake dead grass and clean up area in general.
  • Reads gauges and reports readings.
  • Operates mowing machine.
  • Reports any major obstruction on grounds that might occur during rain storms, such as fallen trees, to supervisor.
  • Helps in sewer department.
  • Performs other related work as required

Qualifications

  1. Must have a working knowledge of the use of simple tools.
  2. Ability to operate and make minor repairs or adjustments on such equipment as mowing machines and edging machines.
  3. Ability to understand and carry out oral instructions.
  4. Good physical condition and sufficient stamina to work long hours under adverse working.
  5. Willingness to perform any type of assigned task.
  6. Ability to perform simple math calculations.
  7. Possess a Valid Mississippi Drivers’ License.
