Nature of Work

This work involves typing and performing work of limited complexity.  Incumbent will spend the major portion of the time doing general clerical or typing work and will performstenographi work as needed.  Clerical work will follow well defined procedures and the employee will generally work with close supervision.  On new and complex work assignments detailed instructions information is obtained or geven.  This position is classified ” Non-Exempt” under Fair Labor Standard Act.

Examples of Work

  • Takes and transcribed letters, reports, statements, memoranda and other material.
  • Type from copy, rough draft or other sources.
  • Type index cards and fills in form letters.  Composes correspondence and other material from instructions in routine matters.
  • Prepares reports of collection activities.
  • Operates standard office machines not requiring previous or special training other than in typing.
  • Maintain statistical and financial data and records related to activities of a unit or department; summarized information submitted; enter data on reprot form.
  • Prepares periodic reports of agency activities under administrative direction.
  • Answers telephone and personal inquires relative to activities of the office and refers callers when necessary to other person where incumbent is unable to supply the information requested.  Maintain files and records.


  1. Knowledge of office procedures, practices, and equipment.
  2. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Access, Excel
  3. Some Knowledge of business English, spelling, and commercial arithmetic.
  4. Ability to understand and follow oral and writtten instructions.
  5. Ability to make simplw computatuions and tabulations with speed and accuracy.
  6. Ability to learn assigned tasks readily, to adhere to prescribed routines, and to develop some skills in the operation of common office appliances.
  7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
  8. Transcribing notes, and operation and caring for a standard typewriter.
  9. Graduation from a standard four year high school or GED some college preferred but not required.
  10. Must possess a Valid Mississippi Driver's License.
