Nature of Work

This work involves the enforcement of the laws of the State of Mississippi and laws and ordinances of the City of Greenwood. Incumbents in this position patrol areas of the City in patrol cars and check suspicious persons and establishments. Work is performed to insure law and order. Arrests are made when necessary. Accidents are investigated. Duties are assigned and reviewed by an immediate Supervisor. This position is classified Non-Exempt under FLSA.

Examples of Work

  • Patrols City area using patrol car, bicycle, or on foot.
  • Work Traffic, Investigate and report traffic accidents.
  • Inspect public establishments requiring licenses to insure compliance with rules and regulations.
  • Warns or arrests persons violating City or State Laws. Respond to calls and investigate.
  • Operate radio equipment.
  • Make preliminary investigation of crimes.
  • Attend court to handle court duties.
  • Operate switchboard, typewriter, or copy machines.
  • Paid overtime.

Qualifications

  1. Graduation from a standard four-year high school or G.E.D.
  2. Must be a citizen of the United States
  3. Must be at least 21 years of age.
  4. Within the first 12 months of employment the employee will be scheduled to attend the twelve-week Minimum Training Standard Course. Students attending this course are required to stay in the dormitory. Failure to satisfactorily complete the entire course will result in termination of employment, unless already certified.
  5. Possess good mental and physical conduct.

Must hold a VALID MISSISSIPPI DRIVERS’ LICENSE
