Nature of Work

Oversee the daily operation of the Community Development Division.  Acts as Liaison Officer between the Mayor and various City Services (i.e., Public Works, Fire, Police, Housing and Utilities) on all matters relating to inspection, AND code enforcement. This position is classified as “Exempt” under Fair Labor Standard Act.

Examples of Work

  • Supervises Division Inspectors, including scheduling of inspections.  Establish examination procedures and certifies to the Municipal Clerk those eligible for license issuance and renewal.  Maintains records of all licensed electricians; plumbers and gas servicemen, ensuring licenses are current.
  • Responsible for the inspection of all commercial buildings and hazardous materials storage and disposal.
  • Designated as the City of Greenwood, Director of Emergency Management (Civil Defense); shall be well versed and trained in planning and operations of the various departments which will operate to protect the public health, safety and welfare in the event of an enemy attack or disaster as defined in the appropriate ordinances. 
  • The Director will act as an advisor to the Mayor during emergencies; participate in all Mock Disasters, coordination with the Director, Civil Defense Leflore County on the involvement of the various City departments.
  • The Director is further designated as the City of Greenwood Loss Control Director.  In this capacity, the Loss Control Director shall conduct monthly inspections of every Department of the City.  Safety procedures and practices in the work areas shall be carefully monitored.  A copy of each accident report will be reviewed to determine if safety procedures have been followed.  The Loss Control Director shall provide direction to the various Department Heads to correct noted deficiencies and work closely with each Departmental Safety Officer in establishing a positive training program. 
  • The Director shall be responsible for coordinating with insurance agents employed by the City on all matters relating to Loss Control.  They shall also submit a monthly report to the Mayor on all matters dealing with Loss Control.
  • The Director or their designee shall be present at all meetings of the following boards. Although the Director is a non-voting member, they shall provide information on loss control matters to the board members:
  1. Greenwood Advisory Park Commission;
  2. Greenwood Board of Adjustments under zoning;
  3. Housing Board of Adjustments and appeals; and,
  4. Planning Commission.

 

 

Qualifications

  • Graduation from a standard four-year high school, or successful completion of the GED.  Must have a minimum of 5 years of experience in loss control.
  • To be considered highly qualified, the applicant should have:
  • Considerable knowledge of modern theories, principles, and methods of training in building design as it relates to structure safety
  • Ability to recognize incendiary operations and skills in conducting
  • Ability to make clear, concise, written and oral reports.
  • Ability to keep records and make accurate reports.
  • Ability to meet the public under stressful conditions.
  • Must possess a Valid Mississippi Driver’s License.
