Nature of Work

This is unskilled and limited semi-skilled manual work.  Work of this class involves performance of routine unskilled manual labor tasks and limited semi-skilled tasks in the carrying out of a variety of maintenance and service activities.  Assignment includes the use of standard hand tools and power operated devices.   Work usually is performed under direct supervision, although assignments which are repetitive in nature, once learned, may be carried out under general supervision.  This position is classified “Non- Exempt” under FLSA.

Examples of Work

Sorts recyclable materials such as aluminum cans, steel cans, and plastic bottles into appropriate containers;  sorts paper materials such as newspaper, copy paper, and mixed paper into appropriate bins, breaks down cardboard boxes; removes unwanted materials such as glass, plastic bags, and Styrofoam from recyclables; moves containers of recyclable materials to designated area in warehouse using pallet jack or forklift.

Performs a variety of janitorial tasks; sweeps ware house, picks up litter on grounds, cleans restrooms.

Assists individuals at warehouse with the unloading if recyclable materials from their vehicles; assists city employees in the transport of recycling roll-off bins; assists city employees in the pickup of recyclable materials at various public offices and area businesses.


Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to learn the use of hand and power tools incidental to assigned tasks.

Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods and at times under unfavorable weather conditions.

Must possess a valid Mississippi Driver’s License.
