Nature of Work

This position is unskilled manual labor in janitorial duties and related tasks at City Hall and the Police Department.  The duties involve performance of repetitive janitorial duties.  Specific instructions and supervision are received on unusual tasks.  Normal assignments are checked by spot inspection or as a result of complaints.  This position is classified as non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act.  This position requires incumbent to work the following hours:

7:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon

12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. (Lunch)

1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Examples of Work

The following examples are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed in position allocated to this classification.  The absence of a specific statement of duties does not exclude those tasks from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment of the position.

Clean litter and sweeps sidewalk.

Sweeps, mops, scrubs, and polishes floors, washes windows, woodwork and walls.

Mows lawn, edge grass and cut hedges as needed, in front of City Hall.

Empties trash containers, vacuums, dusts, and cleans all offices.

Thoroughly cleans restrooms each morning, and rechecks following lunch period, resupplying with paper towels, hand soap, and tissue.

Reports the need for City Hall building maintenance supplies/repairs to the CAO, and to the Chief of Police for the Police Department.

Pick up mail from all offices in City Hall @ 9:00 a.m. and 3:30p.m for delivery to the Post Office and deliver to Mayor’s Office prior to 9:45 a.m. each day.

Work trustees as assigned by the Chief of Police.

Responsible for raising the flags @8:00 a.m. and lowering them @3:45 p.m. each workday.

Qualifications

Ability to learn standard methods and use of materials and equipment used in janitorial work.

Ability to read, write, and follow instructions.

Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform manual cleaning tasks.

Must have a Valid Mississippi Driver’s License.
