Nature of Work

This is hazardous, responsible work; incumbent controls and extinguishes fires, protects life and property and maintains equipment as an employee of the City of Greenwood.  Work involves the study of manuals and attending classes daily on proper procedures to extinguish fires.  Responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls.  Makes forced entries and rescues persons or assists in rescue operations as directed during fires or other emergencies.  Performs assigned duties in maintaining equipment, buildings, and grounds, Administers emergency first aid measures and assist in various minor City duties.  Incumbent is supervised be a Captain.  This position is classified as “Non-Exempt” under FLSA.

Examples of Work

The following examples are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed in positions allocated to this classification.  The absence of the specific statement of duties does not exclude those tasks from the position if the work performed is similar, related, or a logical assignment of the position.

  • Responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls.
  • Makes forced entries and rescues person or assists in rescue operations as directed during fires and water rescues with boat and also dragging operations or other emergencies.
  • Maintains apparatus, quarters, buildings, equipment, grounds and hydrants.
  • Administers emergency first aid measures.
  • Uses cutting tools, Both manual, gas and power operated.
  • Ventilates buildings. Or aircraft as directed, to remove heat, smoke or gas.
  • May assists clubs and City in Beautification.
  • May act as witness in court in possible arson cases.
  • May give public talks on Fire Prevention.

Qualifications

  • Graduate from a standard four-year high school or G.E.D.
  • Ability to successfully learn the operation and maintenance of various types of apparatus and equipment used by the Fire Department.
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn the location of all streets, plugs, and alarms within the corporate limits of the City of Greenwood
  • Sufficient physical strength and agility to do prolonged and exhaustive work under adverse conditions and pass a stringent physical examination conducted by a doctor assigned by the City of Greenwood.  (The initial physical examination will be scheduled by the City and it at no cost to the prospective employee.)
  • Must Possess a VALID MISSISSIPPI DRIVERS’ LICENSE.
  • Must successfully complete the pre-employment physical agility test conducted by the Fire Department Training Officer.
  • Must successfully complete a psychological evaluation.

Special Requirements

The Greenwood Fire Department has an extensive six (6) months training program resulting in a series of probationary examinations that must be successfully completed within this time frame.  Failure to satisfactorily pass the examinations will result in termination of employment.

Within the first twelve (12) months of employment the employee will be schedule to attend the (6) weeks Minimum Training Standard Course at the State Fire Academy, Pearl, MS.  Students attending the course are required to stay in the dormitory.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the entire course/attend will result in termination of employment.

THE PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST CONSISTS OF NINE (9) TASKS THAT MUST BE PERFORMED WITH SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS.

They are:

  1. Stair Climb
  2. Hose Drag
  3. Equipment Carry
  4. Forcible Entry
  5. Ladder Raise and extension
  6. Search
  7. Rescue
  8. Ceiling Breach and Pull
  9. Aptitude Test
