Committees
300 Oaks Road Races Committee
The 300 Oaks Road Races Committee sponsors an annual race which includes a 10K Run, a 5K Walk and a One-Mile Fun Run. The event, held on the third Saturday of September each year, is sanctioned by the Mississippi Track Club and is attended annually by more than 1,000 participants, both locally and from out of town. The 300 Oaks Road Races are the largest sanctioned race in the state of Mississippi. Other events surrounding the event are a pre-race party the night before the event, and a post-race party with live entertainment, food and beverages, along with an awards ceremony.
Agriculture
The Agriculture Committee helps to promote the agri-business industry, which is so vital to Leflore County. Annual events include a Salute to Agriculture, a Young Farmer of the Year award and the Lawn and Garden Expo.
Community Pride
The Community Pride Committee is committed to promoting the appearance of our city and county through Christmas street decorations, landscaping and refurbishing of various areas of town and bi-annual anti-litter campaigns, which encourage everyone in Leflore County to help keep our city and county clean.
Education
The Education Committee is committed to promoting the quality of education in Greenwood and Leflore County through various programs and recognition events. Some of the committee's annual events include the Excellence in Education teacher recognition program, the Student Achievement Awards, the free financial aid workshop and the Choices program for 9th grade students.
Governmental Affairs
The Governmental Affairs Committee has as its agenda the task of being a liason between the community and elected officials, including city and county officials as well as state legislators. The Committee sponsors several events annually, including a Salute to Elected Officials, participation in Delta Legislative Day at the Capitol in Jackson, hosting lunch for area legislators in Jackson and a Review/Preview focus at the end of the year. It is the goal of the committee to keep abreast of decisions that could affect business and industry in the community and to address those issues as they arise.
Industrial Relations/Transportation
The Industrial Relations/Transportation Committee focuses on industry and transportation needs in and around Leflore County. It is the goal of this committee to act as a liason between the community and officials such at the Mississippi Department of Transportation and city and county representatives. The committee is also committed to educating the community about the asset of industry to the area, and it strives to identify and serve the needs of industries in the area.
Leadership Tomorrow
The Leadership Tomorrow has as its main focus the organization and development of the Leadership Tomorrow Class each year. This program is designed to identify the top young leaders under 40 and allow them to participate in a year-long program that allows them to get to know their community as well as to help them develop their communication and leadership skills. The committee also sponsors a Leflore County Hall of Fame Award, which is given annually to a deserving Leflore County resident (or past resident) for their accomplishments regionally, nationally and/or internationally.
Long-Range Planning
The Long-Range Planning Committee is in place to develop and maintain long-range plans for the Chamber, including dues structures, policies and procedures, technology issues and other areas of concern that will affect the Chamber's overall mission and goals.
Membership Committee
The Membership Committee is committed to developing the membership of the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce. This committee actively engages in a Membership Drive yearly to raise money from new members, and it also helps with membership retention and renewals.
Retail Committee
The Retail Committee strives to address and meet various needs of area retailers by means of advertising, promotion and other ideas. The committee helps to sponsor an annual Citywide Sidewalk Sale and a Holiday Open House, and it also helps to develop ideas and projects for the benefit of the entire retail community.
Roy Martin Delta Band Festival
The Roy Martin Delta Band Festival enters its 71st year, and the committee is responsible for the annual Christmas parade, which has become a long-standing tradition in Leflore County. The parade is the oldest and largest Christmas parade in the state of Mississippi, and each year, the parade boasts multiple bands from several states, a feature band and many floats and other parade entries and various vendors as well as a spectacular fireworks show over the Yazoo River at dark following the afternoon event.
Stars and Stripes in the Park Festival
The Stars and Stripes Festival Committee sponsors the annual Stars and Stripes Festival in Whittington Park. This annual event is free and open to the public and encourages participation by churches, families, civic groups and others. Activities and amenities include food vendors, games and activities for children, tributes to veterans, live entertainment and a gigantic fireworks show at dark.
